Air plant

Some of the most fascinating plants on Earth don’t need soil at all. Known as air plants, these species thrive without ever putting down roots in the ground. Most are epiphytes, meaning they grow naturally on trees or other plants, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.
In South Florida, air plants are remarkably adaptable—you can often find them growing on rocks, buildings, and even power lines. That same adaptability makes them easy to grow in all kinds of containers, including our 3D-printed hangers.
Your air plant is a Tillandsia, a member of the pineapple family. There are more than 600 species of Tillandsia, with a wide range of shapes, colors, and sizes. Some grow in tropical rainforests, others in deserts. Here in South Florida, several native species grow wild in trees, where they are part of a rich ecosystem alongside mosses, orchids, and ferns.
Growing your air plant indoors
Light: Place near a bright window, but out of direct sunlight.
Water: About once a week, hydrate the plant by soaking it in tap water. Gently shake off any excess water.
Growing your air plant outdoors in South Florida
Light: Hang in a shady or partly sunny spot, such as under a tree or on a porch. Avoid strong afternoon sun.
Water: Rain usually provides enough moisture, but if it hasn’t rained in a few weeks, spray the plant with water. Watch for curling or dry leaves, or brown, crispy tips—these are signs the plant needs water.
Your 3D-printed hanger is designed to work on its own or linked with others to create a vertical chain. Linking multiple hangers allows you to display a collection of air plants in a compact, eye-catching way. If you’d like to print more, you can download the 3D model here:
