Challenge 2B: Growing Beyond Earth
(2nd and 3rd Grade)
For Individuals or Groups (2–5 students per group) — Maximum points: 200 (100 per entry; 2 entries per school)
YOUR CHALLENGE: NASA is getting ready to send astronauts to the moon, to Mars, and beyond. For these long trips into space, astronauts will need fresh vegetables to eat along the way. NASA has created small gardens for growing plants on spaceships. Now, they need your help to invent a machine that can plant vegetable seeds and harvest vegetables grown inside a spaceship. Downloadable PDF
2B. Illustration – Draw a picture of a machine that can plant vegetable seeds and harvest the vegetables when they are ready. Your machine should work with leafy vegetables like lettuce, fruiting vegetables like tomatoes, or root vegetables like carrots. Depending on the type of vegetables you choose, you will need to learn about what the seeds look like, how they are planted, how they grow, and how to pick the part that we eat.
