Extinction rates are expected to increase in the near future, yet we have a poor understanding of what plants have already gone extinct and the reasons for these extinctions. Every extinction is a conservation failure and identifying the reasons for past extinction events may help us prevent future extinctions. Of the 65 plant taxa believed extinct from the continental United States and Canada, 4 were endemic to Florida, with 2 being global single-site endemics. Each of these Florida extinctions will be discussed in detail.
