Event Details

Tuesdays, April 18 through May 23, 2023 | 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM

For this 6 week course students will produce visual journals of the surrounding tropical landscape at the “botanical” scale in their own experimental mixed media sketchbooks. The aim of this course is to develop a process of studying plants in a playful way and expressing those ideas through various mediums!

TJ Marston helps you feel comfortable sketching outside to quickly “note” what you see, and then we take these sketches back to the studio to experiment more!  In order to simplify our mixed media experiments, we will use only gouache (or watercolor) and colored pencils. Students are welcome to use other mixed media at their discretion.

Materials

Basic Gouache (or watercolor) set

  • Professional quality paints in tubes is the best but any paints you have will do! If using watercolor you can squeeze out into a travel palette and rewet when using. If you do prefer watercolor, I suggest you get a tube of white and black gouache for mixing and making opaque colors on the side 🙂
  • Suggested colors are from my current gouache palette. No need to use these if you have your favorites but I find people ask, so here it is. All colors are Winsor Newton brand unless otherwise specified.

    • Naples Yellow or Naples Yellow Deep
    • Raw Sienna or Yellow Ochre
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Indigo or Prussian Blue
    • Alizarin Crimson
    • Burnt Sienna
    • Burnt Umber or Russet Brown (Holbein)
    • Zinc White
    • Paynes Gray(M.Graham), blue black(Holbein), or lamp black
  • Colored pencils (basic landscape palette)
    • I use a mix of Derwent Drawing Pencils and Carandache Luminance Pencils in a palette very similar to my gouache palette. I found a great starter set online that’s affordable and great quality, rather than have you get a bunch of individual pencils. It’s the Landscape Set by Prismacolor. The only color I love that’s not included in this set is a Dark Indigo (Carandache Luminance).
  • Royal Talens Art Creations Sketchbooks are cheap, great for mixed media, and come in a variety of sizes
  • Small and Larger handheld sketchbook with smooth mixed media paper
  • Palette for mixing
  • Cup/ jar with airtight lid (for water cup on the go)
  • Paper towels/rag for cleaning brush
  • Synthetic watercolor or gouache brushes (10 round, 1/2” flat)
  • Waterbrush (suggest large flat travel brush or large round)
  • Pencil pouches (for carrying paints and pencils on location. I love the clear ones that you can see inside!)
You may want to bring a travel stool or blanket to sit on but we will also try to move to spot in the garden with some seating.
