This 5-week course will be for anyone looking to add watercolor to their every day sketchbook! We will cover the fundamentals of using watercolor with speed, color theory and sketching on location tools and tips. Basic skills in drawing are not required but we encourage participants to feel comfortable making a mark on the paper so they can dive right in.

Required Materials:

Basic Watercolor travel palette (plastic or metal with mixing areas that holds at least 6 colors)
Professional Watercolor Paints (in tubes or squeezed into empty pans in your palette) :

  • Transparent Red Oxide OR Burnt Sienna
  • French Ultramarine Blue OR Ultramarine Blue
  • Cerulean Blue Chromium
  • Monte Amiata Natural Sienna
  • Hansa Yellow Medium
  • Quinacridone Rose

Size 8-10 round watercolor brush
Size A3-A5 Watercolor sketchbook
7×10 (or larger) watercolor block 100% cotton, cold press
Water bottle and cup
Paper towel or rag
Waterproof black ink pen
Pencil, Eraser
Portable stool (optional)

Instructor Bio: TJ Marston is an award-winning landscape designer, urban sketcher and part-time lecturer at Florida International University. TJ discovered a passion for sketching while pursuing her Master’s in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. Keeping a regular sketchbook boosted her creativity and became the foundation for her design process. TJ brings her passion for sketching into her popular visualization and design courses at FIU’s School of Architecture. More recently, TJ discovered urban sketching as a way to document her life with her family of five. She finds joy in helping others breakthrough their fears and develop new skills in their sketching journey.
