Sausage Tree

Kigelia africana

Range: Tropical Africa

Originally from the riverbanks, floodplains and savannas of sub-Saharan African, this tree can grow to 60 feet tall. It produces a dark red, bell shaped flower with lot of nectar and an unusual fragrance. The flowers only open at night and are pollinated by bats. The flowers are followed by large, woody brown fruits shaped like sausages. The fruit can grow up to 24″ long and weigh up to 20 pounds. Historically, parts of the sausage tree have been used as herbal medicines for treating infections, wounds and digestive or respiratory problems. Dyes are made from from the roots, and dugout canoes can be made from the trunks.

Sausage Tree

Kigelia africana

Range: Tropical Africa
