Challenge 1C: Pollinator Penthouse – Hotel
(4th and 5th Grade)
For Individuals or Groups (2–5 students per group) — Maximum points: 200 (100 per entry; 2 entries per school)
YOUR CHALLENGE:
Pollinating insects, such as bees, wasps, flies and beetles play a vital role in plant reproduction and are the backbone to global food crops. Unfortunately, these pollinators are declining and face major threats due to habitat loss, pollution and use of pesticides. One way to support pollinator populations is by providing safe havens, such as bug hotels, in yards and school grounds. Depending on the insects you aim to care for, bug hotels can be made in many shapes, sizes, and materials. Research local pollinators and the important services they provide ecosystems and create a place where insects can find sanctuary and reconnect to their world. Downloadable PDF
