Jamaican Caper

Morisonia cynophallophora

Range: Native to South Florida, the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America

The Jamaican Caper is a native shrub or small tree commonly found in coastal hammocks and pine rocklands. It features glossy, dark green leaves that are folded when young, giving a distinctive two-tone appearance—light green beneath and deep green above. The plant produces striking white flowers with long, showy purple stamens that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Flowers are followed by slender seed pods that split open to reveal bright red interiors and shiny black seeds. Jamaican Caper is drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant, and ideal for native and coastal landscapes.
