Marquesas palm

Pelagodoxa henryana

Range: Islands of the southwest Pacific

This majestic palm is found on a few remote islands in the southwest Pacific. It was apparently cultivated and carried from island to island in ancient times, possibly because of its edible seeds. Now its natural origin is unknown, but it appears to grow well in rainforest conditions with constant warmth and moisture. It can be difficult to create those conditions in South Florida gardens, so Pelagodoxa is one of the more challenging palms to try here.

Marquesas palm

Pelagodoxa henryana
