Lignum vitae

Guaiacum sanctum

Range: Florida and Caribbean, Mexico to South America

Lignum vitae is a wonderful, small landscape tree that is native to Florida and tropical America. It is a tough and easy garden plant, slow growing and requiring little maintenance. It puts on an impressive show of blue-purple flowers followed by orange seed pods that split open to reveal red-coated seeds. The plant attracts butterflies and birds. Lignum vitae has been harvested aggressively for its valuable wood, which is so dense that it sinks in water. As a result, lignum vitae is increasingly rare and endangered in the state of Florida.
