Cigar orchid

Cyrtopodium punctatum

Range: S. Florida, West Indies & Mexico to S. America

The cigar orchid is one of the rarest Florida native orchids. It is also one of the most dramatic, developing large clumps that can bear thousands of flowers at a time. This is one of the species planted here as part of Fairchild’s Million Orchid Project. Fairchild, with the help of schoolchildren and volunteers, has replanted several thousand cigar orchids in urban Miami-Dade, helping to bring this species back from the brink of extinction.
