This is a smaller form of the Egyptian Papyrus, the ancient source of one of the earliest forms of paper. Its strong, lightweight stems have been used to make many products, including baskets and boats. Today, it is grown as an ornamental water garden plant, where its graceful foliage and flower stalks create a unique effect.
