Conocarpus erectus

Range: Florida, Bermuda, Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexico to South America, Galapagos, West Africa

Native to local mangrove habitats, buttonwood is one of the toughest, most resilient landscape plants for coastal habitats. With a very wide natural distribution, it withstands salt, flooding, and hurricane-force winds and also adapts to urban conditions. Growing as a large shrub or a multi-trunked tree in the landscape, it is often used as a hedge or screen.
