This East Asian conifer is a superstar of a plant, growing well under an extremely wide range of conditions. It is very commonly planted as a hedge in South Florida residential neighborhoods, but it also makes an attractive tree when given enough space. It can even grow as an indoor houseplant or bonsai. The name “plum pine” refers to the fleshy, purplish seed coatings. There are several different varieties available to home gardeners, including some that are especially compact and low-growing.
