Miniature date palm

Phoenix roebelenii

Range: Solomon Islands & Vanuatu

This charming plant from Southeast Asia is a favorite in South Florida gardens. Small in stature and graceful, it is a miniature version of the date palm. It comes from lowland rainforest habitats, unlike its desert dwelling cousins,  making it particularly well suited to our humidity. As a slow growing palm that rarely attains a height of more than 10 feet, it is a great choice for landscaping on a small scale. It is also a tough and adaptable houseplant, able to survive in containers for many decades.
