Asian bayberry
Nageia nagi
Range: Japan, Taiwan, and Southeastern China
This East Asian conifer is rarely seen in South Florida, but it is an attractive evergreen that grows well in warm regions. Its broad leaves are not at all like the needles found on most conifers, giving the tree an unusual appearance. Its young leaves are edible, and its seeds are used as a source of oil. A valuable timber tree, the wood is used in construction and furniture making.
