Calabash tree

Crescentia cujete

Range: Caribbean & Mexico to Brazil

Often grown as a curiosity, this odd-looking tree is best known for its conspicuous, gourd-like fruits. Its irregular branching pattern can give it a strange shape, and its greenish, purple-streaked flowers are otherworldly. With a hard outer shell, the fruit can be shaped into many useful things including bowls, bottles, and cups.
