Teddy bear palm

Dypsis leptocheilos

Range: Western Madagascar

Madagascar has nearly 200 species of palms of every size and shape distributed across its many kinds of habitats. Found in a single rainforest location in the northwestern part of the island, this palm is a tall, majestic landscape plant. The base of each leaf is covered with a reddish brown fuzz, giving this palm its common name, “teddy bear palm.” Although it is a beautiful palm, it remains rare in South Florida gardens.
