Florida strangler fig

Ficus aurea

Range: Florida & Caribbean, Mexico to Panama

This is our native strangler fig, one of several fig species of this type. Its seeds sprout in the branches of a tree or palm, where it grows and sends its roots down to the ground. Once it connects with the soil, it grows vigorously until it overtakes and often strangles its host tree. Florida strangler fig grows naturally in local hardwood hammock habitats and is sometimes planted as a shade tree. It grows rapidly to a very large size, and its fruits are attractive to birds and other wildlife.

Ficus aurea
