Sapodilla

Manilkara zapota

Range: Mexico and Central America

Sapodilla is a popular tropical fruit tree that bears round, greenish brown fruits with a sweet, brown sugar flavor. Native to tropical America, it was carried across oceans by European colonists and is now grown worldwide. The tree produces a sticky latex called chicle, which was used in early formulations of chewing gum. Sapodilla makes an attractive and robust shade tree, but has been found to be invasive in some parts of our region.
