A Tradition Rooted in History

The first Member’s Day took place in April 1938, listing 37 species of palms and 31 species of trees, shrubs, and vines.

Historically, plants offered for sale are propagated from stock growing at Fairchild or in the gardens of staff and volunteers.

Many Members still bring their own nursery cart or wheelbarrow, a tradition dating back to the earliest sales. Fairchild also offers plant valets with carts.

The Member’s Day Plant Sale is a Garden tradition that began 87 years ago with Dr. David Fairchild.

That tradition continues today, giving Fairchild Members access to a curated selection of the rarest plants in South Florida, along with firsthand guidance from the Garden’s horticulture team.

This is the only time in the year when these plants become available for purchase, a gesture to celebrate our members.
