Designed for beginners and seasoned artists alike, this figurative painting workshop positions the participant to explore subject matter ranging from portraits, landscapes, and florals.  Topics discussed will range from ideas on observation, measurement, color mixing and expressive mark making.  PLEASE NOTE: This is a 7-session class that takes place every Thursday beginning 1/14/21 and running through 2/25/21 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Join Ray Kincaid, Miami Bonsai Society member to learn the basics of the ancient art form of bonsai. Learn the history of bonsai, understand the basic care and maintenance of growing a bonsai tree, explore the tools used to create bonsai and learn the styles and rules that govern styling a bonsai tree. Each participant will receive a bonsai tree to work with and take home!  No prior experience needed.

Cultural requirements for common orchids will be addressed, with demonstrations of dividing and repotting orchids, how to choose potting materials and types of orchid pots and mounts.  PLEASE NOTE: This is a 7-session class that takes place every Saturday beginning 1/23/21 and running through 2/6/21 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Learn the basics of 3D Design using TinkerCAD. Objects will be 3D Printed at the Innovation Studio and will be available for pickup within 1-2 weeks. In this session, you’ll learn how the 3D printer works and how to design your very own objects to print!

South Florida’s sunsets seem to get richer with color and the moon bigger as it begins to rise. In this one-night class students will photograph the rise of the moon. Sturdy tripods and cameras with interchangeable lenses or point-and-shoot cameras with close-up settings and user-adjustable settings are strongly recommended. Please note that this class is designed for intermediate to advanced students.

The full moon is a very powerful and intensive time. At this time of the month, the moon is illuminated in its full beauty and one might feel an energetic change with increased emotions or intense feelings. Experience the sunrise at Fairchild. This course will offer the opportunity to photograph the Garden’s landscape, dramatically lit by the rising sun. Local photography instructor, Carlos Cuaso, will demonstrate photographing outdoors in the early morning natural light. Instruction will be tailored to your individual level, whether beginner or advanced.

When South Florida gardeners hear of Ficus, they tend to think of giant banyans that loom over houses and destroy sidewalks. Mention of Clusia conjures images of dense green hedges of the ubiquitous Clusia flava. However, Ficus (with over 800 species) and Clusia (with 300-400 species) are amazingly diverse genera that provide some of the most promising new additions to tropical landscapes.

Join Dr. Chad Husby, Fairchild’s Chief Explorer, where we will explore all the ways to be a fig, from giant trees to tiny epiphytes, groundcovers, and delicate vines. We will also explore some exciting Clusia species with exceptional form and striking flowers that should be given greater consideration in tropical gardens.

Join Adrienne Etkin Nascimento of Admari Tea and Chaguan Teahouse for Tea Sessions at Fairchild, a delicious way to rejuvenate and revitalize the spirit, and open the heart. Each week (bi monthly, monthly), Adrienne will guide us through a different tea exploration highlighting a variety of specialty tea, mindfully sourced from tea gardens throughout the world including (but not limited to) Taiwan, Japan, China, India and Sri Lanka.
Each session begins with a short tea meditation before continuing on a tea journey where we will explore specific tea cultures while we taste and evaluate their offerings. These tea sessions will educate, delight and expand your awareness in a casual and fun way.

Learn to take your photography to the next level and create more artistic images. This class will delve into the components necessary to compose a good photograph and create moods and special effects.  The use of lines and lighting in creative ways will teach the student how to create depth effectively, using repetition and texture, as well as other visual elements of art.

Time will be spent taking photographs in the Garden to practice these skills and a group critique will reinforce the understanding of these new concepts. ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WILL BE FOLLOWED. MASKS ARE MANDATORY AND SOCIAL DISTANCING WILL BE ENFORCED.
